The rubber on the body of the tool is soft to the touch, contrasting with the smooth metal that makes up the top and bottom.It's stronger in your hand than you might think, in fact, it's almost shocking in its size. You then place the cap of the cigar in to the indentation and push down on the top, this definitely creates a soft movement which forces the actual cutter itself through the cap of the cigar. The stainless steel blade opens by pushing down on the tiny piece at the underside of the cigar cutter, which releases the spring loaded section upwards. As the blade passes through the cap and reaches the end of its travel, it clicks to lock into place and stays this way until you press the trigger again.

I solved this problem relatively easily by not pushing the cap all the way down into the hole in the cigar cutter when cutting the cigar, although this sometimes resulted in an unhealthy cut as you basically keep the cigar in the space while using the cutter.The dent in the head when cutting was a little deep for my taste, which meant that every cigar I cut with it initially had a draw that has been too open.
